Briefing session on the Child Marriage Restraint Bill 2026 – WPC Punjab
Lahore 13 April 2026: A briefing session was held today with members of the Punjab Women’s Parliamentary Caucus on the Child Marriage Restraint Bill 2026. Advisor to the Speaker and Head of the Parliamentary Development Unit, Mr. Usama Khawar Ghumman, delivered a comprehensive briefing on the bill.
WPC members expressed their full support for this important initiative and emphasized the need for its effective implementation. The members also participated in today’s meeting of the Standing Committee on Local Government, where the bill was unanimously approved, and reaffirmed their strong support.
They further highlighted the importance of media collaboration for awareness campaigns to educate the public and promote the protection of children’s rights.
Following the briefing, members also attended the meeting of the Standing Committee on Local Government, where the bill was under discussion. With the permission of the Chair, Caucus members including Ms. Amra Khan, Ms. Rushda Lodhi, Ms. Somiya Atta, and many other Caucus members strongly endorsed the bill.
Ms. Amra Khan emphasized that this legislation will play a transformative role in improving the health and future of young girls, contributing to a more progressive and equitable society. Ms. Rushda Lodhi shed light on the legal dimensions, underscoring that strict enforcement of the law is essential, and that no loopholes should allow violators to escape accountability. Ms. Somiya Atta highlighted the severe impacts of child marriages, particularly in rural areas, and stressed the need for effective implementation to protect girls from serious health risks.
Women Parliamentary Caucus unanimously supported the bill and, following its passage in the committee, expressed great satisfaction and appreciation for this milestone. Members commended the government’s initiative, stating that this law will significantly contribute to the protection, health, and empowerment of women and girls across Punjab.
